Powerlifting Experiment
Yes, it’s time.
I have never yet trained powerlifting-style, but alas, Kris’ impending Virtual meet has forced me into the proverbial corner.
So, undaunted by the horror that lies ahead, I’m going to embark on a 9-week Russian peaking program designed to up one’s max on the three lifts. This should give me some time to reflect upon poor technique and perhaps even mend such as they might arise.
I think I’m safe though, because my technique actually isn’t half bad, even if I do say so myself.
And no, I do not believe I will be so thrilled by this experience to give up my regular kind of training. After all, what is old-school weight training if not strength AND musclemass? I’m going to call it: Powerbuilding! Guffaw! ![]()
I expect I’ll return to regular lifting pretty much right after the meet in February 2007. Basically, I should by that time be able to bench 115kgs / 253lbs for 6-8 reps. That ought to turn a few heads at the fitness gyms… Especially since I’m not that huge sizewise. My current stats are: 178cm length (5,11?) at 96kgs / 211lbs. I haven’t the foggiest idea what my fat% is, but if I had to guess, I’d ballpark it somewhere around 20%…
If someone reading this (hello, anyone there..?) is going “what virtual meet??” at this point, might I refer you to the site of the fellow who had this bright idea in the first place: Kris.
In any case, it’ll be fun. Maybe.

This will be an interesting experiment. As for luring you over to the dark side, this is just making it easier

Yeah yeah, first workout today, 10 weeks out from the meet.
You’ve got excellent technique, BUT we could always do some powerlifting specific tweaks to it… at least widen the stance on the squat a bit, plus I shall do my best to convince you to use a belt on the deads and the squats. How well that goes remains to be seen.

Yes, and whether or not we find a belt that is comfy enough for my sensibilities…

Comfy? ;-D

Well, yes.
The old, very worn belt was actually quite comfy…

Good luck with your powerlifting venture! You just might get hooked and find yourself wearing the thickest, most uncomfy belt tightened down so much that your lower limbs turn blue/gray, just to get that 5 extra pounds for a PR max!

Welcome to the blog, Theresa!
Thanks, I guess…
Although I think I’m too much of a comfort kinda guy to squeeze that belt quite that tight…
