For one thing, you get more speed while using your arms for extra leverage, plus it really only feels like normal walking (except for the fact you're sporting skiing-sticks in your hands). What you really ought to try is running with them. :) Uphill, preferably. Repeatedly. Snow and ice is optional in this case... :D Or, what some crazy Finns do: run in a swamp with the sticks. Now that is some heavy-ass stuff! It is kinda fun..!
